"Bad Feminist" author Roxane Gay will be appearing at numerous events at this year's AWP conference
The Twin Cities is in the midst of a literary renaissance. Not only does Minnesota boast at least ten independent bookstores, more than a dozen literary magazines and journals and two literary-geared organizations – Minnesota Center for Book Arts and Loft Literary Center — it also has seen an upswing in events and readings geared toward an edgier, younger crowd of writers and readers. It was only a matter of time before the Association of Writers & Writing Programs (AWP) would bring its annual conference and bookfair to Minneapolis. With an expected 12,000-plus attendees, it's the largest literary conference in North America. This year's conference features more than 2,000 presenters and 550 readings, panels and craft lectures from more than 700 presses, journals and literary organizations from around the world. Tons of off-site events will also take place this weekend, hosted by Bust magazine, Revolver, Paper Darts and Rain Taxi. (Wed.-Sat. $60–$285 for conference and bookfair, off-site events range from free to $95. Minneapolis Convention Center, 1301 2nd Av. S., Mpls. awpwriter.org)
Here are our top picks for off-site events at this year's AWP:
