35W 'life rings' project

ALSO THIS WEEK: 35W PROJECT

Starts Wednesday: Swedish visual artist Maja Spasova and St. Paul poet Todd Boss are collaborating on an event to mark the fifth anniversary of the Interstate 35W bridge collapse. Spasova has created 35 oversized "life rings," up to 7 feet in diameter, which will be anchored in the Mississippi River between the Stone Arch Bridge and the new 35W bridge. Painted with blue pigments that glow in the dark, the rings are expected to bob in the water from Aug. 1 to 31. The informal unveiling is at 8 p.m. Wednesday, the anniversary of the disaster. Boss has written 35 poems, each 35 words long, that the Star Tribune will publish Wednesday. To hear the poems read by Minnesotans, call 612-573-5900. Contribute your own 35-word poems at www.startribune.com/35Wpoems.
