Swiss-born players drafted No. 1 overall in NHL history. Nico Hischier became the first on Friday when the 18-year-old center was chosen by the New Jersey Devils.

Previous times the Devils had the No. 1 overall pick since the franchise moved to New Jersey in 1982. Kirk Muller (1984) and Brendan Shanahan (1987) were both selected second overall.

First-round picks made by the expansion Vegas Golden Knights. They chose center Cody Glass at No. 6, center Nick Suzuki at No. 13 and defenseman Erik Brannstrom at No. 15.

Finnish players drafted in the first round, a record for that country. There were 23 Finns taken in all.

Minnesotans drafted in the seven rounds.

College-connected players taken in the first 18 picks. UMass recruit Cale Makar was taken fourth overall by Colorado, and Gophers recruit Casey Mittelstadt went eighth to Buffalo.

2015

The last time a goalie had been picked in the first round (Ilya Samsonov by the Washington Capitals ) before the Dallas Stars chose Boston University's Jake Oettinger at No. 26. Oettinger is from Lakeville.
