Pat Sullivan, Auburn's first Heisman Trophy winner, died on Sunday morning at the age of 69.

Sullivan was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2003. A family statement said he "fought a long and difficult battle as a result of his treatments."

As Auburn's quarterback in 1971, Sullivan won the Heisman Trophy, edging Cornell's Ed Marinaro 1,597-1,445 in the voting.

The College Football Hall of Famer played in 30 NFL games with four starts from 1972-75 with the Atlanta Falcons.

He was the head coach at TCU (1992-97) and Samford (2007-14).
