While the stain of torture is undeniable, the questions for us now are: Will it be indelible? Will its corrosive effects continue to spread and to haunt us as a nation? Can we guarantee that our nation will never again engage in such illegal and immoral practices?
The answers depend on what our government does now. Unless and until we as a nation investigate fully and disclose completely the conditions, decisions, policies and practices that allowed torture to proliferate, despite existing laws prohibiting torture, we will be shackled to it. More…
