From certain elements in the western media, we often hear the refrain that because Israel is a free and open democratic society, that to exemplify "honest" friendship, Israel's adherents are obliged to simultaneously applaud and criticize Israel. This is especially noticeable in spite of rigorous efforts by the Jewish State to problem-solve dealings with adverse internal elements, and to limit enemy casualties during wartime engagements. Simultaneously, there is stark media sympathy for Israel's defense against her adversaries. These same media critics who advocate frank criticism of the Jewish State, are conspicuously vague and generously pardoning, when describing the numerous, murderously ruthless, and indefensible actions by Israel's enemies. Fortunately, there are outspoken advocates (friends) of Israel who are firmly outspoken, national leaders in Israel's defense. They honor and support Israel as one would support a venerated and loyal friend. I was honored to be in the company of Israel's "friends" last Thursday night at the Living Word Christian Center in Brooklyn Park. From April 19-25, 2010, the Living Word Christian Community gathered to support and honor Israel and the Jewish people in "Celebrate Israel Week". This was the third annual celebration. Activities included an Israel Marketplace, Holocaust exhibit, a night with Israel Soldiers, a movie presentation, and a gala "Night To Honor Israel". Speakers included Living Word Pastors Mac and Lynne Hammond, Dennis Prager and Israel Midwest Consul Orli Gil. This weeklong "Celebration" reflected the shared beliefs and commonalities between Christian and Jewish Americans, and love for the State of Israel as America's comrade-in-arms and in- deeds. The Living Word Christian Church is associated with Pastor John Hagee and the CUFI (Christians United for Israel). CUFI's website includes the Israel Pledge below on the following link: http://www.cufi.org/site/PageServer We believe that the Jewish people have a right to live in their ancient land of Israel, and that the modern State of Israel is the fulfillment of this historic right. We maintain that there is no excuse for acts of terrorism against Israel and that Israel has the same right as every other nation to defend her citizens from such violent attacks. We pledge to stand with our brothers and sisters in Israel and to speak out on their behalf whenever and wherever necessary until the attacks stop and they are finally living in peace and security with their neighbors.
