Stone has been a journalist for print and broadcast, a U.S. Senate press secretary, a college relations director, a journalism teacher and a freelance writer and consultant.

He was a reporter at the Minneapolis Tribune from 1971-1981 covering everything from police to general assignment to legal affairs. He worked at WCCO-TV from 1981-1990 as assignment editor and then assistant news director. Stone was the late Sen. Paul Wellstone's first Washington, D.C., press secretary from 1991-1993. He was director of college relations at Macalester College from 1993-2008. During that time he also taught journalism.

He's currently a communications and media consultant and a freelance writer. He is a volunteer with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
