Mario Lucia's power-play goal at 11:07 of the third period spotted Wayzata what appeared to be an insurmountable 3-0 lead over Edina in the championship game of the Plymouth Turkey Trot tournament Saturday night at Plymouth Ice Center.

However, Steven Fogarty and Lou Nanne ignited a late Hornets' rally with back-to-back, unanswered goals -- and it took an heroic backstopping effort by Trojans senior Andrew McIntyre, who kicked aside 22 of 24 shots, to stave off a feisty, final Edina charge.

Tanner Jensen and Marc Richards also scored for Wayzata (2-0).

Connor Girard had 28 saves for the Hornets (1-1).

In the semis Friday, Wayzata edged Maple Grove 3-2 and Edina defeated Buffalo 6-1. Maple Grove (1-1) defeated Buffalo (0-2) 5-2 in Saturday's third-place game.

In 2A, I have Wayzata ranked No. 1, followed by Burnsville, Edina, Eden Prairie, Duluth East, Hill-Murray, Maple Grove, Benilde-St. Margaret's, Grand Rapids and, at No. 10, Apple Valley.

Wayzata plays Centennial (0-0) on Tuesday at Centennial Sports Arena in Circle Pines, and Duluth East (0-0) Saturday at Plymouth Ice Center. The Greyhounds are young, quick off the puck and feature top prospects F Dom Toninato and D Nate Repensky, both juniors, and sophomores F Conner Valesano and D Meirs Moore.

Duluth East opens against Cambridge-Isanti (2-0) Tuesday at Duluth Heritage Sports Center.

Meantime, Edina plays host to South Suburban favorite Burnsville (1-0) Thursday at Braemar Ice Arena. The Blaze edged Hill-Murray 6-4 Saturday, as Cory Chapman scored two goals.

Longtime Duluth hockey advocate Dick Stewart was honored with the prestigious Hockey Heritage Hero award Sunday night by the Duluth Clydesdales Junior A men's hockey team.

"My wife probably summed up tonight best when she said, 'It's wonderful to get tributes like this when you're still here to see it,'" joked Stewart, 90, who founded the popular hockey and bike retail shop Stewart's Wheel Goods over 58 years ago. He retired and sold the business that still carries his name in 2000.

Stewart said he has been a Minnesota-Duluth men's hockey season ticket holder since the early 1950's, "dating back to the old Duluth Curling Club."

"I've missed less than five Bulldogs games through all the years, due to business or sickness, and they've got my seat reserved at the new Amsoil Arena at the end of this year," said Stewart.
