Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton met with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Wednesday in a move to rescue shrinking Middle East peace prospects and regain the confidence of Arab nations angry that the United States has not pressed Israel harder to stop building settlements in the West Bank.
The meeting with Mubarak was the latest in a series of sensitive talks Clinton has held with Israeli, Palestinian and Arab leaders during a six-day visit to the region.
Clinton's unscheduled stop Wednesday in Cairo was a mission to ease Arab annoyance and persuade the Palestinians not to make a halt in settlement activity in the West Bank and East Jerusalem a precondition for resuming negotiations with Israel. She has acknowledged in recent days that she should be more precise in articulating U.S. opposition to expanding settlements.
