In Pakistan, bombs strike at government

Last update: July 2, 2009 - 8:24 PM

Bombs targeting police and employees of a Pakistani nuclear facility killed two people and wounded scores more Thursday -- the latest attacks to hit Pakistan as it battles Taliban insurgents near the border with Afghanistan.

A suicide bomber riding a motorcycle slammed into a bus carrying workers from Pakistan's main nuclear facility in Rawalpindi, which is the headquarters of Pakistan's military. The bomber was killed and 29 people were wounded.

The second attack took place near Peshawar, where a roadside bomb killed two policemen and wounded five more, officials said.

No one claimed responsibility for either blast, but Taliban commanders have vowed to target government-related facilities in response to the military operations and ongoing U.S. drone attacks in Pakistan's northwest.

Suicide bombings, once relatively rare in Pakistan, have become an increasingly common weapon for insurgents.
