Christians found many expressions for the holiest day on their calendar.
'RESURRECTION FOR US, TOO': Italy's earthquake survivors celebrated Easter in makeshift tent chapels, seeking comfort amid the tragedy that leveled their cities and killed hundreds of people. "Easter is the day of resurrection for us, too, because we are starting from zero," said Corrado Mongelli, a 50-year-old olive oil producer. L'Aquila Archbishop Giuseppe Molinari said: "We are all a little bit angry with God because we never expected a tragedy this big. But even anger toward God is a sign of faith."
THE PRESIDENT'S CHOICE: President Obama opted for the safe choice for Easter Sunday, visiting St. John's Church on Lafayette Square, the pale yellow church across from the White House where other presidents have worshiped. The pick puts off -- for now -- a keenly awaited decision on a new permanent congregation for the First Family.
A CALL FOR JESUS' HELP: Iraq's embattled Christians took advantage of improved security and gathered around the country. Since the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, Christians have frequently been the target of attacks by Islamic extremists, forcing tens of thousands to flee the country. "We are asking Jesus to help our beloved Iraq and to help all Christians inside and outside Iraq to return to their homes," said George Matti, 65, of Mosul.
THE POPE'S MESSAGE: "At a time of world food shortage, of financial turmoil, of old and new forms of poverty, of disturbing climate change, of violence and depravation which force many to leave their homelands in search of a less precarious form of existence, of the ever-present threat of terrorism, of growing fears over the future, it is urgent to rediscover grounds for hope," Pope Benedict said.
