President Donald Trump is preparing executive orders aimed at reversing Obama-era policies on climate and water pollution, the Washington Post reported Monday. While both directives will take time to implement, they will send an unmistakable signal that the new administration is determined to promote fossil-fuel production and economic activity even when those activities collide with environmental safeguards. One executive order, aimed at bolstering U.S. energy independence, would instruct the EPA to begin rewriting the 2015 regulation that limits greenhouse-gas emissions from existing electric utilities. It also instructs the Interior Department to lift a moratorium on federal coal leasing.
President Trump should not be afforded the "rare privilege" of a state visit, a British opposition lawmaker said Monday, as Parliament debated a call for Trump's invitation to be downgraded and stripped of its royal seal of approval. The nonbinding debate was called in response to an online petition with more than 1.8 million signatures saying a formal state visit "would cause embarrassment to Her Majesty the Queen."
Thousands of demonstrators turned out across the U.S. to challenge Donald Trump in a Presidents' Day protest dubbed Not My President's Day. The events on the federal holiday didn't draw nearly as many people as the million-plus who thronged the streets following the Republican president's inauguration a month earlier, but the message was similar. Rallies were held in New York City, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Salt Lake City, Portland, Ore., and even Rapid City, S.D.
At least 12 aircraft violated temporary flight restrictions through Monday afternoon for President Trump's Palm Beach Mar-a-Lago stay, with at least five of those having the unique experience of being buzzed by military aircraft, federal officials confirmed. Eight of those crossed the line on Friday alone, with three having what likely were unsettling encounters with F-15 jets and one with a military helicopter, according to the FAA and NORAD.
Right-wing provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos has been uninvited to this year's Conservative Political Action Conference after his attempt to clarify past comments on relationships between boys and older men fell flat with organizers. The American Conservative Union founded and hosts CPAC, which is being held Wednesday through Saturday outside Washington. In a tweet on Monday, ACU Chairman Matt Schlapp said that "due to the revelation of an offensive video in the past 24 hours condoning pedophilia, the American Conservative Union has decided to rescind the invitation of Milo Yiannopoulos to speak."
