MANAGUA, Nicaragua — A Nicaraguan army spokesman says a helicopter carrying nine soldiers has crashed on the western edge of Lake Managua and that authorities have recovered one body.

Army spokesman Lt. Col. Orlando Palacios says the aircraft was returning to a military base in the town of La Paz Centro when it plunged 35 miles (57 kilometers) west of the capital city of Managua on Thursday.

Palacios says authorities have not located any survivors or the bodies of the other eight people because the area is difficult to reach.

He says officials haven't determined what caused the helicopter to crash.

He says the aircraft was used for training troops and that the soldiers were returning to the military base after a training session.
