Gen. David Petraeus

Born: Nov. 7, 1952, and reared in Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y.

Education: Bachelor's degree, U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y.; Master of Public Administration and Ph.D. in international relations, Princeton University.

Experience: Command of the 101st Airborne "Screaming Eagles" Division during and after the March 2003 invasion of Iraq; commanded both the Multi-National Security Transition Command-Iraq and the NATO Training Mission-Iraq from June 2004 to September 2005. Promoted to command of the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Prior to service in Iraq, he commanded troops during U.S. operations in Haiti and Bosnia.

Interesting fact: Petraeus' father, Sixtus, was a Dutch sea captain who emigrated to the United States following World War II.
