Centerville, Minn.
I guess you could say that I have had an interest in the weather for most of my life. I first became aware of weather and its effect on daily life with the 1966 tornado outbreaks that struck Fridley. A child at the time, I vividly recall being scooped up by my mother and carried into our storm shelter as the storms passed over our Maplewood home.
As a young mother, I learned to sooth my children’s fears of storms by maintaining a calm exterior, with an eye on the sky, and my ear to the radio.
In 2005, along with my husband, I attended Skywarn training and earned my certification. I discovered that I could be of service to the community by earning my amateur radio license (HAM), and reporting observations directly to the National Weather Service on the Skywarn radio nets. I earned my radio license two months later.
Today, I keep my ear to a different type of radio (HAM), along with TV and the Internet whenever I can. My husband and I work as a team during severe spring and summer storms by watching the skies and along with our home weather station, we report any significant observations to Skywarn. I particularly enjoy tracking the path of storms from the safety of our home station.
