Shakopee, Minn.

Ben Kimball

Ben grew up in Chippewa Falls, Wis., and moved to Shakopee in 1994, where he lives with his family. He graduated from Augsburg College in 2008 with a B.A. in Religion and currently works as an estimating engineer for a local manufacturing firm. Since witnessing powerful storms as a child, Ben has had respect for the weather. Being stuck outside for a portion of the Great Lakes Derecho of 1998 has made Ben a keen observer of the current conditions around the state. During a meteorology course he completed at Augsburg, Ben had to complete a forecasting assignment that required him to submit approximately 20 daily forecasts; he completed over sixty. One can usually find Ben looking at the sky.

Super Bowl kicks off the latest snowstorm

Last update: February 7, 2010 - 1:55 PM

The snow is moving in already, a mere three and a half hours before kickoff. When all is said and done on Tuesday evening, the Twin Cities Metro Area is looking at 5-10 inches of new snow. The Winter Storm Watch will begin for the Metro at 6:00 pm tonight, sometime around the start of the second quarter.

My predictions are as follows:

Super Bowl - Colts 35, Saints 31

Twin Cities snowfall - 8" by Tuesday evening

This map from the National Weather Service shows what might happen in the next few days.

Winter Weather Advisory

Last update: October 11, 2009 - 8:15 PM

A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect for most of the Metro Area (Anoka County being the exception) from 1:00 am until 4:00 pm Monday. The National Weather Service is predicting about 1 inch overnight and 2-4 inches tomorrow. It seems to be a southern event, with most of the snow predicted to fall south of the Metro Area.

Frost Advisory for the Twin Cities

Last update: September 29, 2009 - 7:03 PM

It’s that time of the year again. The Twin Cities Metro Area is under a Frost Advisory from midnight until 8:00 am Wednesday. Overnight temperatures are expected to be in the mid to upper 30s with light winds.

I might be in the minority here, but I am happy with this weather. I enjoy the cool days and cold nights.

It smells and looks like rain

Last update: September 21, 2009 - 7:38 PM

I have not seen actual rain since an early morning thunderstorm on August 25. I was hoping to see something today and I just received my wish. A line of showers is moving due north through the southwest metro. The fresh smell of rain and a cool breeze are blowing through my house. The roads are wet and the neighborhood kids are riding their bicycles in the moderate shower.

Cooler temperatures are coming

This sunset is reminiscent of those colorful skies of winter and is an indication of a nice autumn-like cooling trend that is coming up this weekend. I am a fan of temperatures in the sixties, so this weekend is going to be perfect to spend at the Minnesota State Fair. The cool weather is perfect for a Saturday night of walking and eating at the fair.

In addition to the Flash Flood Watch and the Head Advisory, most of the southern half of Minnesota (including the Metro Area) is under a Tornado Watch until 10:00 pm.

Check out the high dewpoint!
