Hurricane Ida Brushing Cancun, Cozumel, and Western Cuba

Last update: November 8, 2009 - 2:25 PM

Image Credit: Naval Research Lab Monterey Ida gained Category 2 status with highest sustained winds of 100 mph as it threaded the Yucatan Channel between Mexico and Cuba. In so doing, this potentially destructive storm steered clear of busy Cancun and Cozumel on eastern Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. This was also true of westernmost Cuba, which weathered some outer squalls of Ida, but little else.

In short, Ida followed a path that held direct land impact to a minimum as it headed out of the Caribbean Sea bound for the open Gulf of Mexico.

Once away from Yucatan and western Cuba, Ida will make its way northward to the middle Gulf of Mexico. Warm surface waters will allow Ida to hold hurricane status on Monday. Later, it will experience cooler water and increasing wind shear by late on Monday into Tuesday. Substantial weakening will set in.

Nonetheless, residents on the central and eastern Gulf Coast should pay close attention to the latest updates on Ida.
