Flooding is likely along the central and eastern Gulf coast on Monday into Monday night as Ida approaches the region. Moisture from a low over the western Gulf will merge with Ida's moisture, adding to the concerns for serious flooding.
Three to five inches of rain will deluge areas from southeastern Louisiana to western portions of the Florida Panhandle. The heaviest rain will fall as far inland as central Alabama through Monday night.
Rainfall amounts this high are enough to create flooding issues for many communities in the flood-weary South. Residents of the lower Mississippi Valley, in particular, were soaked by round after round of rain in October.
Fortunately, the heaviest rain will bypass areas that have been hit the hardest by recent flooding episodes.
Flooding could close roads and even highways, especially close to the coast, where there will be pounding waves. Motorists should avoid flooded roadways and may want to check out detours before even hitting the roads.
The torrential rain will at least threaten to slow traffic along the heavily traveled I-10 on Monday and Monday night.
