Ida made landfall on Thursday on the Mosquito coast of eastern Nicaragua as a hurricane. Damaging winds, flooding rain and a storm surge were unleashed upon several coastal communities.
Hardest hit was Sandy Bay Sirpi, where 80 percent of the structures were destroyed. Fortunately, the Mosquito coast of Nicaragua is lightly populated.
However, it will be hard to get help to the remote coastal communities.
Ida spun into eastern Honduras on Friday. Heavy rain preceded its arrival with 7 inches falling at Puerto Lempira, Honduras. Rainfall totals were likely 10-20 inches across eastern parts of Nicaragua. But there is a lack of weather reporting stations across the country.
Central America is familiar with hurricanes this late in the season. Eleven years ago, Hurricane Mitch devastated Honduras and Nicaragua. As much as 75 inches of rain fell as Hurricane Mitch stalled out over Honduras. Almost 20,000 people lost their lives.
Ida will not stall out and has entered the northwest Caribbean. It may regain some strength as it heads toward the southern Gulf of Mexico through the weekend and into early next weekend.
