Ida made landfall Thursday on the Mosquito Coast of eastern Nicaragua as a hurricane. Damging winds, flooding rain, and a storm surge were unleashed upon several coastal communities.
Hardest hit was Sandy Bay Sirpi where 80 percent of the structures were destroyed. Fortuantely, the Mosquito coast of Nicaragua is lightly populated.
But, it will be hard to get help to the remote coastal communities.
Ida spun into eastern Honduras Friday. Heavy rain preceeded its arrival with 7 inches falling at Puerto Lempira, Honduras. Rainfall totals were likely 10-20 inches across eastern parts of Nicaragua. But, there is a lack of weather reporting stations across the country.
Central America is familar with hurricanes this late in the season. Eleven years ago Hurricane Mitch devestated Honduras and Nicaragua. As much as 75 inches of rain fell as Hurricane Mitch stalled out over Hondruas. Almost 20,000 people lost their lives.
Ida will not stall out. Ida is expected to enter the Caribbean Friday night. It may regain some strength as it heads towards the southern Gulf of Mexico.
