Ida is not the only feature in the Atlantic Basin that is closely being monitored. An area of low pressure is also churning in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico, and will target the United States in the upcoming days.
The low is expected to push northward across the western Gulf of Mexico this weekend, then approach the central Gulf Coast on Monday. Strong wind shear should prevent this low from developing tropically, but will not keep the low from becoming potent.
As the low presses northward, its interaction with an area of high pressure will cause winds to increase and waves to build across the northern and western Gulf of Mexico Sunday into Monday. During this time, winds up to 50 mph and waves as high as 20 feet are expected. These conditions will make boating extremely dangerous. Flooding may ensue not only from water being driven onshore, but also from the low's torrential rain.
