Ida to Regain Strength

Tropical Depression Ida will continue to push farther into the northwestern Caribbean Sea tonight. Further strengthening is in store for Ida over the weekend, but the system should once again weaken prior to threatening the United States.

The extremely warm waters of the northwestern Caribbean Sea, combined with little wind shear, will allow Ida to regain tropical storm status by Sunday. It is not out of the question that Ida intensifies into a hurricane either as it approaches or enters the Gulf of Mexico early next week.

Beyond that time, Ida could head toward the central or eastern Gulf Coast. This path, however, will cause Ida to encounter strong wind shear prior to reaching the United States. Those powerful winds should tear at Ida and force it to weaken. Even if weakening occurs, Ida could still spread torrential rain over a portion of the Gulf Coast and kick up rough surf throughout the Gulf of Mexico.

All interests along the Gulf Coast should closely monitor the progress of Ida through the weekend.
