Ida developed over the southwestern Caribbean Sea Wednesday and made landfall
over eastern Nicaragua Thursday morning. Ida will pose a serious flood threat
to Central America during the next few days. Irrespective of the status of the
storm, rainfall heavy enough to trigger serious flooding and mudslides will
pelt areas from Costa Rica to Honduras.
Ida will continue to drift to the north and west and will head toward eastern Honduras over the next day or two.
Very heavy rain will fall into the weekend on the Caribbean side in Nicaragua to eastern Honduras, and on the Pacific side, it will pelt Nicaragua and northern Costa Rica as the storm draws moisture northward from the Eastern Pacific Ocean.
The highest rainfall of at least 10 inches and potentially even 20 inches or more within two to three days will threaten serious flooding along with mudslides. Then, too, damaging, storm-strength winds will be possible along the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua.
