An excessive amount of rainfall in October and a recent heavy rainstorm are responsible for widespread flooding in the central part of the country. Rivers in Missouri and Illinois as well as in southern Arkansas and Louisiana are carrying the most water right now.
Even though a dry weather pattern will persist into the weekend, it will take days for crests to move downstream and for flood waters to finally recede.
Note that the large stretch of the Mississippi from south of Cairo, Ill., to the Gulf Coast is not expected to flood. This portion of the Mississippi normally does not flood when the Ohio River is not abnormally high.
