Typhoon Mirinae landed in central Vietnam as of Monday evening (morning Eastern
time). Rapid weakening occurred after landfall, due to friction over land.
Mirinae's landfall happened near Tuy Hoa, between Nha Trang and Qui Nhon, in southern central Vietnam, marked by damaging winds and flooding rainfall. Up to 15 inches of rain fell, including more than 9 inches at Qui Nhon, north of the landfall.
According to the Associated Press, the heavy rain resulted in severe flooding that killed 11 people in central Vietnam.
The remains of Mirinae will still bring some torrential downpours to Cambodia.
Mirinae is the storm that tore through the Philippines as a tropical storm Saturday, unleashing flooding and wind damage in Manila and elsewhere. As many as 16 deaths have been blamed on the storm in the Philippines.
Like the Philippines, Vietnam is reeling from frequent tropical storms and typhoons this year. Typhoon Ketsana, for example, was blamed for more than 100 deaths in Vietnam after killing almost 1,000 in the Philippines.
Meanwhile, Tropical Depression 24 has formed east of the Philippines a couple hundred miles east of Manila. This system could become Tropical Storm Nida over the next day or so as it heads to the southeast, although it is not likely as the system is already close to the islands of the Philippines.
