Parts of the interior Northeast could be in for some accumulating snow as early as Thursday.
A storm will intensify off the Middle Atlantic coast late during the day Thursday. Rain will break out across most of the Northeast during the afternoon Thursday. At the higher elevations downwind of the Great Lakes and from upstate New York to northern Maine, there will be some wet snow, but accumulations should be light.
By Thursday night, rain and wind will intensify over most of New England, while farther north there should be just enough cold air in the mountains for a period of moderate to perhaps heavy snow. The best chance for moderate accumulations will be in the mountains from northern New Hampshire through western Maine. The combination of wind and snow will also limit visibility for motorists.
Snow showers and gusty winds will continue to impact parts of western New York and western Pennsylvania through the night. Roadways above 2,000 feet will be slippery through the night.
By Friday, snow may mix in with rain across eastern New England. Boston, Providence and Portland will all have the possibility of a wintry mix.
