Typhoon Lupit is on track to strike a devastating blow on the northern Philippines. Ranked a mighty "super" typhoon packing Category 4 winds as late as early Monday morning, EDT, Lupit will roll toward the west from the open Philippines to a potential landfall on northern Luzon Island during the middle of the week.
A landfall by Lupit, which will be a powerful storm through at least Wednesday, would bring a range of severe impacts. First would be destructive winds, potentially above 100 mph near any landfall.
More far-reaching would be excessive flooding rainfall. Even without a direct landfall or with significant weakening of the storm, Lupit will bring excessive rain to northern Luzon. Areas of northern Luzon flooded by Parma, a storm that unleashed devastating floods early in the month, could be hit hard yet again.
The threat will include inundating rainfall of 10 or even 20 inches.
Other potential severe impacts would be a battering of the coast by storm tides and high waves. Hillsides may break loose, unleashing mudslides and landslides.
