Super Typhoon Lupit is expected to move through northern Luzon Island, Philippines, during the middle of the upcoming week, striking the same areas that Ketsana and Parma struck in the past few weeks.
Far-northern portions of Luzon Island will experience the worst conditions Tuesday through Thursday as the center of Lupit passes over the island. Winds will be sustained in excess of 100 mph and could gust as high as 160 mph during landfall. Typhoon-force wind will cover much of central and northern Luzon Island. Even the nation's capital, Manila, may experience brief, tropical storm-force winds during some heavier showers and thunderstorms.
Very heavy rain will also fall in an already flooded region. Over 20 inches of rain may douse far-northern Luzon Island, while many areas receive over 5 inches of rain as Lupit moves westward over the region. Additional widespread flooding will result, and the rains will trigger numerous mudslides.
