A shot of sticky warmth more fitting of July than of May wafted over the heart of Europe during the early week. The heat paved the way for outbreaks of severe thunderstorms before being swept aside by a strong cold front.
On Monday, temperatures soared to the mid-90s over northern Italy including a high of 96 degrees in Milano. Highs above 90 degrees were reached into eastern France, where Lyon, Mulhouse and Strasbourg hit 91 degrees. Lahr, Germany, sweltered at 93 degrees as Trier reached 91.
On Tuesday, the axis of heat shifted eastward under attack from the cold front. Daytime temperatures soaring well into the 80s helped to spark severe thunderstorms that raked southern Germany with damaging winds, hail, lightning strikes and flooding downpours. Winds gusted to 88 mph in Landsberg. Rain and hail amounted to more than 2.5 inches at Konstanz, near Switzerland.
