Virtually all flights to and from the East Coast have been canceled today as Hurricane Sandy is expected to bear down on the Northeast.

Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport spokesman Patrick Hogan said dozens of flights to New York, New Jersey, Washington, D.C., and other cities were canceled.

"The airlines were able to notify travelers before they headed to the airport, so we have not seen people stranded at the airport," Hogan said. "But there are a number of people who are not able to travel today."

The hurricane is expected to hit New Jersey Monday night, but has already produced heavy rains in some areas. Schools, subway stations and bus routes have also been canceled.

As of Monday morning, Hogan said airline officials have not announced further cancellations his week, but that could change as the storm progresses.
