The Minnesota Vikings increased their contribution Friday to the new Minnesota Multipurpose Stadium on the eastern end of downtown.

The additional $14 million will go primarily to buy 1,200 more television screens the team had already planned to acquire. That means the new stadium, opening in 2016, will have 2,000 strategically located screens throughout the clubs, concourses and concession stands.

The Vikings previously had funded the design plans for the additional HDTV screens. The new money pays for the purchase and development of the technical backbone for the screens, the video control system.

The Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority both announced and approved the contribution at its regularly scheduled meeting Friday.

The new money brings the contribution from the team's owners to $566 million, an additional $89 million since the stadium legislation passed. Taxpayers are covering the remainder of the $1 billion cost.

The remainder of the new money will go toward lighting, utility and signage enhancements. Concession areas, for example, will have signs designed so menus can be easily changed depending on the events at the stadium.

Take, for example, the operator who wants to serve more barbecue at a monster truck event, MSFA executive director Ted Mondale said. "If it's a corporate event, we might want to have more — I don't know — salads. Lobster, of course," he quipped.
