In the latest in a long string of illicit drug difficulties, Twin Cities sports radio personality Jeff Dubay was charged Thursday with having methamphetamine and more than two dozen used hypodermic needles in his vehicle.
Dubay, 47, was caught in a police speed trap while driving in Cottage Grove and was pulled over by police at about 4:40 p.m. Wednesday near 80th Street and Ideal Avenue, a stop that led to the more serious discoveries, according to police Capt. Peter Koerner.
Dubay was charged in Washington County District Court with drug possession and remains jailed. His license suspended, Dubay was driving 50 miles per hour in a 35 mph zone near Park of Cottage Grove High School when he was stopped, police said.
A search turned up two unused hypodermic needles in his back pants pocket, 31 used needles in a computer bag on the front seat and a small piece of paper that held a trace amount of meth, police added.
One of the used needles held a liquid "that was believed to be a controlled substance," the criminal complaint read.
Dubay lives in Cottage Grove, about 1 1/4 miles east of where he was stopped.
At the time of Dubay's arrest, there also was a warrant out for his arrest from Wright County for driving without insurance.
In an April 3 posting on Facebook, Dubay wrote that he "made the personal choice to stop taking an antidepressant ... I already feel the difference and am scared for what may come. I just ask that friends check on me once in a while."
Dubay had been a longtime co-host with Paul Allen on KFAN. In 2008, Dubay was arrested for cocaine possession in Maplewood and fired.
He was convicted and entered a yearlong diversion program but flunked out. He then was offered participation in Substance Abuse Court, but flunked out of that, too.
In 2010, he was ordered to spent 87 days in the Ramsey County workhouse after admitting he again used cocaine in May of that year.
Dubay returned to the airwaves on ESPN1500, but he was let go after a year in 2014 in a cost-cutting move.
The Twins batboy in the late 1980s and early 1990s whose rapid-fire speaking style has been a signature of his career, Dubay has been hosting a sports-oriented podcast. Others filled in for Dubay during his Wednesday evening live podcast.
In an interview on WCCO Radio in July 2012, Dubay said he started experimenting with crack during a difficult divorce. He was critical of practices at some treatment centers (he went to three) and said he finally kicked his habit by locking himself in his bedroom.
