Session Margarita

Serves 1.

• 1 1/2 oz. (3 tbsp.) manzanilla sherry

• 3/4 oz. (11/2 tbsp.) tequila or mezcal

• 3/4 oz. (11/2 tbsp.) orange liqueur, preferably Combier

• 3/4 oz. (11/2 tbsp.) lime juice

• 1 barspoon agave syrup

• Pinch of salt

Directions

Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice and shake until chilled. Strain into a rocks glass filled with ice. Garnish with a lime wheel.

Near Miss

Note: This drink offers the simple sweetness of fresh raspberries and mint with the power of the peel: both lemon and grapefruit peels. Muddling half a lemon and two swaths of grapefruit brings out their aromatic oils and a little bitterness, which keeps this juicy, fruity whiskey cooler in balance. The result is a gorgeous magenta drink that wakes up your taste buds and keeps your mouth watering. To make simple syrup, combine equal parts sugar and hot water in a resealable jar, seal and shake until dissolved. Let cool before using and store for up to several weeks in the refrigerator. • 1/2 lemon, cut into 3 wedges

• 7 ripe raspberries

• 3/4 oz. (1 1/2 tbsp.) simple syrup (see Note)

• 2 grapefruit twists

• 2 oz. (1/4 c.) bourbon

• Leaves from 2 sprigs of fresh mint, divided

• 2 oz. (1/4 c.) chilled club soda

Directions

Combine lemon wedges, raspberries, simple syrup, and grapefruit twists in a cocktail shaker and muddle until raspberries are well broken up. Add bourbon and 1 sprig of mint and fill with ice. Shake until very well chilled, about 15 seconds. Double-strain into an ice-filled collins glass, pour the club soda down the side of the glass, and give it a brief, gentle stir. Garnish with remaining mint sprig.
