'Don Giovanni' freshens up

A rich, sex-addicted aristocrat whose insatiable carnal appetites wreak carnage in the lives of those around him? That would be Don Giovanni, the reckless libertine at the swirling epicenter of Mozart's classic opera. The recently rejuvenated Skylark Opera Theatre updates the action to Prohibition-era America, with artistic director Robert Neu at the helm. Audience members are promised buffet treats during Giovanni's supper scene — and dessert when hellfire finally engulfs him. (7:30 p.m. Thu.-Fri. Woman's Club of Minneapolis. $70-$75; 612-343-3390, skylarkopera.org)

Mahler's 'Resurrection'

From death to a transcendental vision of new life and eternity — that is the existential journey traced in Gustav Mahler's "Resurrection" symphony, the second of his nine completed symphonies. The Minnesota Orchestra is in the midst of recording all of Mahler's completed symphonies for the Swedish label BIS. This week it will play the "Resurrection" with Osmo Vänskä on the podium and vocal input from the Minnesota Chorale in the heaven-storming finale. Adding further luster to this unmissable season-ending concert is a guest appearance by world-class pianist Marc-André Hamelin, who will play a Haydn concerto as an upbeat contrast to the Mahler. (8 p.m. Fri.-Sat., 2 p.m. Sun. Orchestra Hall, Mpls. $29-$96; 612-371-5656, minnesotaorchestra.org)

'Sunday' with Sondheim

"Sunday in the Park With George," inspired by 19th-century French painter Georges Seurat, is one of Stephen Sondheim's most sophisticated, thought-provoking works of musical theater. The Guthrie's new production, directed by Joseph Haj, is a must-see for all followers of this great American composer. (7:30 p.m. Sat., 7 p.m. Sun. Ends Aug. 20. Guthrie Theater, Mpls. $15-$64; 612-377-2224, guthrietheater.org)

Chanting for peace

Gregorian chant — where all the singers in a choir intone the same note simultaneously — originated in the medieval church. Its still, contemplative qualities have given it new life in our cluttered and fast-paced modern era. Sample its gentle ministrations with this vespers performance by the Rose Ensemble. (3 p.m. Sun. Basilica of St. Mary, Mpls. Free; roseensemble.org)

'All You Need Is Love'

Travel back a half-century to 1967 and the Summer of Love. The Twin Cities Gay Men's Chorus takes us to that headily optimistic era in "All You Need Is Love," a Beatles-themed program peppered with vocal arrangements culled from the prolific Lennon-McCartney songbook. (8 p.m. Fri.-Sat., 2 p.m. Sun. Ted Mann Concert Hall, Mpls. $25-$48; 612-624-2345, tcgmc.org)
