The legendary Beatles record producer George Martin has died at 90, according to a message on Twitter by Ringo Starr.

"God bless George Martin peace and love to Judy and his family love Ringo and Barbara George will be missed," Starr wrote on Tuesday.

Martin was known as the "Fifth Beatle" after signing the band from Liverpool, England, to a record contract when no one else would.

He went on to work with them on many of their hit records, including "Yesterday" and "A Day in the Life."

Martin is considered one of the greatest record producers of all time, with 30 number 1 hit singles in the U.K. and 23 in the U.S. In recognition of his services to the music industry and popular culture, he was made a Knight Bachelor in 1996.

Some records other than the Beatles that Martin worked on include:

"Bad to Me," Billy J. Kramer with the Dakotas, 1963

"Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying," Gerry & the Pacemakers, 1964

"Goldfinger" by Shirley Bassey, 1965

"Live and Let Die," Paul McCartney and Wings, 1973

"Sister Golden Hair," America, 1975

"Blow by Blow" (album), Jeff Beck, 1975

"All Shook Up" (album), Cheap Trick, 1980

"Ebony and Ivory," Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder, 1982

"Say, Say, Say," Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson, 1983

"Morning Desire," Kenny Rogers, 1985

"Tommy" original cast album, 1993

"Candle in the Wind 1997," Elton John, 1997

Born in Highbury, London, Martin taught himself how to play the piano as a child and then joined the Royal Navy. Upon leaving the service in 1947, he attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama on a government grant, where he learned composition, orchestration and mastered the oboe.
