Humorist David Sedaris is returning to the Twin Cities

Humorist and bestselling author David Sedaris will return to the Twin Cities in the fall. The show by Sedaris, who appears annually in Minnesota, is the biggest one in a slate of productions announced by Hennepin Theatre Trust, which books four theaters in downtown Minneapolis.

Sedaris will play the State Theatre Nov. 1.

The other announced shows, all locally produced, take place in the New Century Theatre. “The Realish Housewives of Edina: A Parody” was written by Second City writers Kate James and Tim Sniffen. It promises a comedic exploration of brawls, booze and Botox (Sept. 24–Nov. 15).

The sendup of Edina housewives is followed by “The How and the Why,” by Sarah Treem, a TV writer (“House of Cards,” “In Treatment”) and show creator (“The Affair”). The drama is centered on two female biologists, one at the end of her career and the other at the beginning. The work of the young scientist threatens to overturn the contributions of her elder. Theatre Unbound co-produces the show (March 10-20, 2016).

Johnathan Tolins' one-man comedy, “Buyer & Cellar,” has been a crowd pleaser in New York and London. It centers on a fame-craving Los Angeles actor who works in Barbara Streisand’s basement.  One day, the megastar herself joins him in the basement and they hit it off (March 31–April 24, 2016).

Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Fri. 612-455-9501 or online.

Babes in Toyland add more U.S. fest and club dates

Currently in Europe for a two-week stint around Spain's Primavera Festival ahead of their June 21 hometown date at Rock the Garden, Minneapolis roar-rock legends Babes in Toyland will expand their reunion run to include a series of U.S. club and festival gigs in late August and September.

The new itinerary -- announced this morning -- will kick off Aug. 27 and 28 at mid-size clubs in St. Louis and Kansas City, respectively. Babes will go on to hit Seattle’s popular Bumbershoot Festival on Sept. 5 and then the Pop Montreal International Festival in Canada on Sept. 19. Tickets for most of the shows are due on sale Friday morning. See the full itinerary below.

The band members have said all along they won’t be doing a full-blown, two-month, get-in-the-van kind of tour because of bassist Maureen Herman’s parental duties. Hence the patchwork timing of these dates. However, the fact that they keep adding shows confirms their many statements about how much fun they've been having since playing their first reunion shows in California back in February.

We should know after Rock the Garden whether or not a second Twin Cities gig might get added to that itinerary. The members have expressed interest in playing First Ave again in our conversations with them – and First Ave obviously would love to have them, too.
