Thousands of units made by a prominent Twin Cities fireplace company are being recalled, federal officials announced Monday.

The natural gas fireplaces and pellet stove heaters were manufactured by Hearth and Home Technologies of Lakeville.

About 2,500 corner-unit Heat-N-Glo and Heatilator indoor fireplaces are being recalled because their fireboxes can bow outward, posing a fire hazard, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The agency said there have been two reports of units charring and causing minor property damage but no injuries.

Consumers are being directed to stop using the fireplace and contact the store where they bought the unit for inspection and repair. They were sold from March 2008 through November 2014 for $1,200 to $8,000.

The other recall involves about 2,000 Quadra-Fire Mount Vernon E2 pellet stoves and inserts. The CPSC said fuel can back up, creating enough pressure to break the unit's glass front. Eight instances of glass breaking have been reported to the company but no injuries.

Consumers are being directed to stop using the unit, set the small blue dial to minus 4 and follow daily maintenance directions in the owner's manual. Owners should also contact their retailer for a free enhanced control board. The units were sold from February 2014 to January 2015 for about $4,000.
