Phil Hughes is scheduled to throw in the bullpen on Thursday at Target Field, a session that will be scrutinized more than usual.

After leaving Tuesday's game with a 2-0 lead and 75 pitches thrown in the seventh , Hughes revealed that he has been battling shoulder fatigue. He said the coaching staff had been aware of it, but it was not serious enough to go on the disabled list. But now that he's thrown 75 pitches - the most since Apri. 29, which was about the time he started having problems - Twins manager Paul Molitor wants to make sure the righthander is healthy enough to remain in the rotation.

``We still have him down as our starter for Sunday,'' Molitor said. ``We'll see - when he gets out there (Thursday), most likely - if this thing is going to be a lingering issue and if we need to make alternative plans. I don't think we'll be able to determine that until we see how tomorrow goes.''

Sometimes pitchers will skip bullpen sessions if they are dealing with fatigue, but Hughes said he's been making his regular between-starts bullpen sessions all season. I checked with him briefly on Wednesday, and he said he's treating Thursday like a normal session.

Molitor was told about the reaction to Hughes being replaced on Wednesday.

``I can't help that,'' Molitor said. ``I have to listen to what my guy says.''

That's the thing about this episode. Hughes pretty much set things up to be removed from the game when he asked the staff to watch his velocity. When Molitor went to the mound last night, Hughes did not try to talk him into remaining in the game. Hughes brought out his own hook.
