Stephen King adaptations often fail to be as scary on screen as they are on the written page. That’s not the case with “Mr. Mercedes,” in which a sociopath running over innocent bystanders is only part of the horror. Minnesotan Kelly Lynch (making out with her son) and Brendon Gleeson (huffing and puffing in a drunken stupor) also provide plenty of chills. King was so impressed that he agreed to a cameo.

The princess diaries
I’m guessing there’s at least one editor at People magazine who would be just fine with putting Princess Diana on the cover every week. Television has shown more restraint in paying tribute — but not much, especially with the end of August marking the 20th anniversary of her death. “The Story of Diana” is ABC’s early-bird special, with an appearance by Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer.

Peter Stormare, so memorable as Gaear Grimsrud in 1996’s “Fargo,” is the star and creator of “Swedish Dicks,” a series about fish-out-of-water investigators in Los Angeles. The show, originally developed for web audiences in Sweden, features appearances by Keanu Reeves and Traci Lords.
