Traffic in downtown Wayzata was rerouted for several hours after a train struck a street sweeper at the intersection of Grove Lane and East Lake Street at about 6:15 a.m. Wednesday.
Barry Avenue and Ferndale Road were blocked and traffic was being rerouted onto Hwy. 12, until mid-morning.
Hennepin County Sheriff's Office officials said that the driver of the street sweeper suffered only minor injuries from the accident.
The Burlington Northern Santa Fe train struck the street sweeper broadside behind the driver's cab, and pushed the vehicle down the tracks before it was able to stop.
The train, with two locomotives and 92 cars, was heading eastbound from Willmar to Minneapolis, according to BNSF spokeswoman Amy McBeth. It was carrying a variety of freight and 74 of the cars were loaded, she said.
The rail crossing where the accident occurred has crossing arms and lights, McBeth said. There were no injuries to the crew.
