Steve Sarvi
The mayor of Watertown from 2000 to 2005, Steve Sarvi also has been the city administrator in Lanesboro, Watertown and Victoria. He served in the military for 20 years -- with the Army Reserves, the full-time Army and the National Guard. As a Guard member, he served for 16 months in Iraq and was part of the peacekeeping force in Kosovo.
His campaign argues that the low-key incumbent Kline, campaigning softly, depicting himself as a grandfatherly fellow suburbanite, is in fact every bit as conservative as his more full-throated colleagues -- and increasingly out of a sync with the district. Sarvi is stressing his military service and seeks to cast Kline as an ally of President Bush and corporate interests.
Sarvi's challenge will be to find eye-catching issues in a district that leans rightward.
