Solidly suburban, the second has some of the fastest-growing communities in the state, as housing developments have spread across land for nearly two decades. What had long been a swing region has become increasingly Republican, in step with that steady suburban growth. In his third term, Rep. John Kline has consistently focused on military and security issues. It is far more than a bedroom community, with several large employers, among them Northwest Airlines and Thomson/West publishing company. Kline is seeking reelection; the DFL Party has endorsed Iraq war veteran and former Watertown mayor Steve Sarvi to challenge the Republican incumbent.

Incumbent - John Kline, R
Kline, of Lakeville, was elected to Congress on his third try in 2002, finally unseating Democrat Bill Luther. His dogged pursuit of the office followed a 25-year career in the Marines. He is a reliable conservative voice and vote with a special interest and expertise in military matters. His style tends to be formal and dignified. Challenger - Steve Sarvi, D
The mayor of Watertown from 2000 to 2005, Steve Sarvi also has been the city administrator in Lanesboro, Watertown and Victoria. Sarvi served in the military for 20 years and seeks to cast Kline as an ally of President Bush and corporate interests.Read More...
