Paulsen worked for U.S. Sen. Rudy Boschwitz and for retiring incumbent Jim Ramstad, first in Washington and then back in Minnesota as director of Ramstad’s state office. Elected to the Legislature in 1994, Paulsen, of Eden Prairie, was chosen for several leadership positions, including House Majority Leader. Unlike the DFL endorsement battle, Paulsen’s path to the party endorsement was clear. He faced no Republican opposition to the seat.
Even with the Ramstad connections, though, Paulsen’s task will be to establish himself as the best fit for the suburban western Hennepin County District. It is the state’s most affluent district and is closely divided politically. President Bush won the district in 2004 with 51 percent of the vote. But Democratic U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar carried it with 55.5 percent in 2006.
Activists of all stripes in the nation's bitter health care debate aren't even waiting for President Obama's prime time address to spin and weigh in on it.
A note to President Obama, Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken and Reps. Tim Walz, John Kline, Erik Paulsen, Betty McCollum, Keith Ellison, Michele Bachmann, Collin Peterson and Jim Oberstar: All arguments about health care reform -- both for and against -- can be stopped with one action.
