Ashwin Madia
Madia, a first-time office seeker, secured the DFL endorsement after an unusually cantankerous battle with state Sen. Terri Bonoff. While Bonoff was considered the early favorite to win the endorsement, Madia, of Plymouth, was aggressive in pursuing party delegates by telephone and by knocking on doors, stepping in at a time when a large number of DFL activists were itching for change. The question will be whether that sentiment extends to the general electorate.
Madia is an Iraq War veteran, having served as captain in the Marines. He left his law practice to focus full-time on the race. His parents came to the United States from India.
