Last week’s fall-like cold stretch served as a sharp reminder of the brevity of the spring sports season. We’ve barely had the chance to bask in spring warmth and already the postseason, in a few sports at least, is upon us.
The badminton state tournament runs Monday through Thursday. The 16-team competition begins Monday at the home sites of the Nos. 5 through 8 seeds (St. Paul Central, Edina, Eden Prairie and St. Paul Como Park). The top four seeds — defending state champion St. Paul Johnson, St. Paul Washington, Burnsville and St. Paul Harding — have byes on the first day and will meet the four teams that come out of Monday’s competition in a straight, eight-team bracket Tuesday at Burnsville to determine a team champion.
The singles and doubles tournament will take place Wednesday and Thursday, with the first day at various sites and Thursday’s final at Eden Prairie.
The boys’ tennis section tournaments begin this week, as do the synchronized swimming section meets. The synchro state meet will be held May 26-27 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
And the track and field true team state meet — not to be confused with the Minnesota State High School League state meet — will be Friday and Saturday at Stillwater High School. The Class 3A meet takes place Friday, beginning at 4 p.m. Class 1A will compete Saturday morning, starting at 10 a.m., followed by Class 2A at 3 p.m. Both reigning Class 3A champions, the Wayzata boys and the Mounds View girls, are back to defend their titles.
