CARTHAGE, Tenn. — Authorities say a Tennessee police officer has fatally shot a man who attempted to hit him with a vehicle.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said in a statement that a security guard at the Smith County Hospital called Carthage police Wednesday morning to report a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot. Authorities say two officers responded and approached the vehicle on foot.
The statement says the driver, 25-year-old Joseph Robbins, reportedly tried to strike an officer with the vehicle, prompting the officer to fire his gun multiple times.
Officials say Robbins was hit and later died. Neither officer was injured.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation does not identify officers involved in shootings. The races of those involved have not been released. The shooting remains under investigation.
Carthage is about 50 miles (80 kilometers) east of Nashville.
