FORT MYERS, FLA. - The Twins rallied to beat the Yankees 4-3 on Tuesday, with Toby Gardenhire, manager Ron Gardenhire's son, in the middle of the winning play.
With Matt Tolbert on second, Gardenhire sent a slow roller up the middle that was booted by New York second baseman Chris Basak. Tolbert raced around third and scored the winning run.
It wasn't pretty, but another Gardenhire got the job done.
"It was kind of nerve-racking to see Toby over here, to tell you the truth," Papa Gardenhire said. "but it was fun, also."
Jeff Cirillo had two of the Twins' eight hits. Yankees righthander Carl Pavano, their Opening Day starter by default because of multiple injuries to their staff, gave up two runs over six innings.
