A car plunged into a central Minnesota lake late at night over the July 4th weekend in a crash that killed a passenger and left the driver jailed on suspicion of being drunk, authorities said Monday.

The crash occurred about 1:30 a.m. Friday on the east side of Franklin Lake, about 10 miles northeast of Pelican Rapids, the Otter Tail County Sheriff's Office said.

Passenger Holly N. Homewood, 29, of New Waverly, Texas, was declared dead at the scene, the Sheriff's Office added.

The driver, David S. Hamil, 42, of Cape Coral, Fla., was arrested and awaits charges that could include criminal vehicular homicide. The Sheriff's Office said it suspects that Hamil, who suffered noncritical injuries, was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

Hamil was driving south on county Road 31, when his vehicle left the road where it curves, entered a ditch, rolled and landed in the lake, according to the Sheriff's Office.

A party camping at the lake heard cries for help and called 911, authorities said.
