Each week, commenter RandBallsStu (BRANDING!) tracks down a former Minnesota sports figure about whom you might have forgotten. This week's timely selection is Paul Edinger, who may or may not have had a positive financial impact on this blog's proprietor when he made the field goal in question. Stu?
The Hunt Down
Name: Paul Edinger
Claim to Fame, Minnesota: the placekicker for your 2005 Minnesota Vikings. That was long enough for him to kick the longest field goal in the Purple’s history, a 56-yard game-winner against the Green Bay Packers, who are currently in last place in the NFC North and desperately searching for answers in an increasingly lost season.
Claim to Fame, Everywhere Else: spent the balance of his NFL career with the Chicago Bears, who used a 6th-round pick on the Michigan State product in 2000. Had the unique kicking stance where he would face away from the line of scrimmage and snap himself around to kick the ball, which was never not goofy-looking. Also ran a Costa Rican kicking camp that Deadspin thoroughly mocked and ridiculed. Speaking of ridicule, his Wikipedia page contains the almost definitely false claim that he “was considered for the role of Steve Stifler in the American Pie movies.”
Where He Is Now: as of 2010, Edinger was living in St. Augustine, Florida with his wife (here are pictures from their wedding) and daughter and kicking for the Jacksonville Sharks of the Arena Football League. He and his wife are listed as the North Florida “street squad product reps” for Innovative Health Solutions, which appears to be a health-drink concern.
Is He on Twitter: apparently. The @kickinitinCosta account has only Tweeted once, in 2009, to promote his aforementioned Costa Rican kicking camp. He follows Jim Haslett, for what it’s worth.
Has He Been in a Twitter Fight with Patrick Reusse: no.
Glorious Randomness: one week after Edinger’s record-setting field goal, Daunte Culpepper’s knee blew up and Steve Smith rowed an imaginary boat.
