Crafters, teachers, artists, nonprofit volunteers and students who often shop at Ax Man Surplus for deals might want to take a detour to ZeroLandfill Harvest. Once a year, architects, designers and sales reps recycle their samples of fabrics, tile, glass, wallcoverings, plastic laminate chips, wood finish samples, cabinet doors, carpet samples, rubber flooring samples and three-ring binders instead of tossing them. Everything is free. Hours are from noon to 3 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. Bring your own container.

Mega kids sales this week
Occasional sale season for kids' consignment begins unofficially this week with four separate sales. It's one-stop shopping that's better than a garage sale for selection and quality with only slightly higher prices on clothes, toys and accessories for infants and kids. Just Between Friends starts it off Thursday through Sunday (High Performance Academy, 2950 Lexington Av. S., Eagan,, 612-308-7005). Other sales include Minnesota Valley Mothers of Multiples on Saturday (Eagan Community Center, 1501 Central Pkwy., Eagan, and two sales on Saturday and Sunday, including Munchkin Markets (Washington County Fairgrounds, Building D, 12300 N. 40th St., Lake Elmo, 651-253-0897) and Treasure Hunt (Hasse Arena, 8525 215th St. W., Lakeville, www.treasure

Most of the sales charge a $1 or $2 admission on the first day. Go early for larger items such as strollers and late for clothes, which are often half-price on the last day.

Stack the discounts at Herberger's
During the semiannual Goodwill Sale, Herberger's offers an easy opportunity to follow the "one in, one out" rule of organizing. For every new garment you buy, donate an equal number to keep your closet under control. Now through Sept. 28, get a 10 to 20 percent off coupon for each item donated, including clothes and bedding. The best use of the coupons is to combine them with an item on sale. The coupon may be used on anything except Incredible Value items, special orders and gift cards. Even cosmetics and fragrances get the discount (15 percent) in all stores as well as Coach handbags (20 percent) in limited quantities in the Rosedale and Northtown stores.
